The All-Star Game is a special occasion, but for a group of former Team USA 18U icons, it holds an even deeper significance. These players, now reunited in Philadelphia, share a unique bond that stretches back many years.
"There are conversations we had on that team about possibly meeting again in the big leagues," reflects Carroll. "To actually make it happen is incredibly cool. It's a special feeling to play against or with these guys, knowing our shared history."
This team, a true powerhouse, dominated the international stage, showcasing their talent and unity. Witt's cycle and Leiter's nine strikeouts in just four innings are testaments to their skill. "That team was something else," Witt reminisces. "We had been building since 2016, and the chemistry was undeniable. The list of big leaguers from that team speaks for itself."
Their dominance was unprecedented, outscoring opponents by a staggering 104 runs and setting a record for most runs scored by an 18U National Team. Abrams, Callihan, Romo, and Volpe were recognized with All-Tournament honors.
"As a high schooler, it's all about testing yourself against the best," Carroll adds. "Playing with and for the best in the country, all united for a common cause, was an invaluable experience."
The depth of this team was remarkable. Crow-Armstrong recalls the lineup maneuvers just to give everyone playing time. "The talent was off the charts. Gunnar Henderson didn't make the cut, and that speaks volumes. Riley Greene, a first baseman, was also a designated hitter. Tyler Callihan played every position imaginable. It was crazy."
The bonds formed during their time together are cherished. Crow-Armstrong and Witt were roommates, and Abrams and Carroll shared a room. Their families also became close. "It's a special connection," Crow-Armstrong says. "I often think back on those days. It's an honor to have been a part of it."
This All-Star Game is more than just a showcase of talent; it's a reunion of friends and a celebration of a shared, extraordinary journey.
