Thawing permafrost, a consequence of global warming, has long been viewed as a significant source of greenhouse gases, releasing ancient carbon stored in frozen soils. However, a recent study published in Nature challenges this simplistic view, revealing a more nuanced and complex relationship between permafrost thaw and carbon emissions. The research, conducted by an international team of scientists from Umeå University, Sweden, and East China Normal University, highlights an overlooked mechanism: the role of rivers in counteracting CO₂ emissions through intensified rock weathering.

As permafrost thaws, reactive minerals are exposed, and water-rock interactions increase, leading to accelerated chemical weathering processes. This process consumes atmospheric CO₂ and transfers carbon into dissolved inorganic forms. The study, which investigated 50 rivers across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, found that river CO₂ emissions decline as permafrost cover decreases, while carbon uptake through rock weathering increases. In some catchments, this geological carbon uptake partially or fully offsets river CO₂ emissions, challenging the notion that thawing permafrost is solely a carbon source.

Liwei Zhang, a biogeochemist at East China Normal University, notes that the study reveals a tight link between biological and geological carbon cycles. While rivers receive large inputs of ancient organic carbon from thawing soils, which microbes convert into greenhouse gases, the geological processes may partly counterbalance these emissions. However, the researchers caution that rock weathering is not a permanent climate solution, as some weathering reactions can also release CO₂ depending on mineral composition.

The findings emphasize the need for climate and carbon-cycle models to incorporate geological carbon sources and sinks. By considering both biological and geological processes, future assessments can better understand the complex interplay between permafrost thaw and climate warming. This study serves as a reminder that nature's solutions to climate challenges are multifaceted and often more intricate than initially perceived.
